How it all Began

The Kirkintilloch Ladies Choir has been in existence since 1960. It was started by Nan Duncan to promote good singing and to entertain locally and throughout the district when invited. Nan was conductor for 20 years and on her retirement the baton was handed over to Margaret Whitelaw, who was to be in charge for 22 years.

The highlight of the choir's year is the Annual Christmas Concert, which is entitled 'A Candlelit Christmas'. This is held in a local church which, as the title suggests, is lit by candles giving the audience the feeling that Christmas is just around the corner.

There is the chance to hear many Christmas songs and carols, some old, some new, and be entertained by guest musicians, readings and poems. The concert also includes an opportunity for the audience to join the choir in traditional carols and songs.

In 1978 the choir was invited to go to Wales to take part in the world famous Eisteddfod. Over the years the choir has appeared on television in 'Songs of Praise' and 'Spirit of Christmas'.

They have also performed very successfully in the 'Glasgow Music Festival' and 'Choir of the Year' competitions and on occasions have performed in joint concerts with the Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir.
